EUMOS STANDARDS

EUMOS is a members´ driven non-profit organization following the objective of maximizing safe logistics in transport. In order to reach this objective, EUMOS establishes standards setting the benchmark for specific aspects of logistics aiming at the highest possible safety. The EUMOS standards are elaborated within a set procedure in technical committees uniting high-level experts in the area. EUMOS makes open calls for experts ahead of the elaboration of every standard ensuring the inclusion of the highest level of expertise. An important area of expertise for EUMOS standards consists in cargo securing which is a set of measures to secure packages and load units to a vehicle with the aim of immobilising them.

Please see the procedure for the elaboration of EUMOS standards here.

EUMOS 40674:2021

SUMMARY: EUMOS 40674 defines the minimum requirements  to be included into the “European Cargo Safety Card”, a single document with the precise instructions on the load and its securing onto the vehicle or the container. With this standard, Eumos creates an easily recognisable checklist for everyone contributing to the logistics chain. The European Cargo Safety Cards will be uploaded to an online register with a verification system to avoid falsification and will be readable via a QR code. There will be several security levels to the Cargo Safety Cards with the highest security system relying on the blockchain technology providing integrity, absence of intermediaries, tracking possibilities and a timestamp.

AUDIENCE: Surveyors, loaders, carriers, truck drivers, logistics operators and outsourced service companies.

EUMOS 40509:2020
Test method for load unit rigidity

SUMMARY: This standard is a revision of EUMOS 40509:2012 adding new elements to the method of evaluating the rigidity of a load unit for more precise results. Main focus of the review defines the equipment certification to measure the rigidity of a unit load on an acceleration bench. As the original standard from 2012 it contains a detailed description of test conditions, evaluation criteria for elastic and plastic pallet load deformation as well as test certificate specifications. EUMOS 40509 is included into Annex 3 of the EU Directive 2014/47/EU on the technical roadside inspection of the roadworthiness of commercial vehicles circulating in the Union.

AUDIENCE: Packaging labs, producers of palletized goods, film converters, cargo securing experts, road side inspectors of cargo securing.

EUMOS STANDARDS UNDER PREPARATION

Technical Committees are currently working on these standards (Contact us for further info)

EUMOS 40250
Ventilation on Vans
SUMMARY: This Technical Committee will elaborate a standard aiming at exploring a clear definition of safe conditions in terms of ventilation in light commercial vehicles in the interest of saving lives and assets. The objective for this standard consists in improving drivers´ and road safety by ensuring minimum requirements for a ventilation system on a van on the basis of data gathered in field research. Please register by 30 September 2021 by clicking HERE
EUMOS 40609:2022
Dynamic Multi-Axis Simulation of Load Stability

SUMMARY: This Technical Committee will elaborate a standard aiming to be the reference for a dynamic load stability test method using a multiaxial packaging structure aiming for maximum precision. This method allows for the reproduction of extreme multiaxial accelerations, under different defined conditions and with a high level of repeatability. It will be based on existing standardised test methods including the static tilt test according EN 12195-1:2011, the driving test according to EN 12642:2017 and the dynamic test method for load unit rigidity according to EUMOS 40509:2020.

EUMOS 40515
Stretch Hood Film Passport – Currently Dicontinued

SUMMARY: This committee aims at finding measurable and repeatable conditions to create load stability on a unit load using stretch hood as the unitization method. TC EUMOS 40515 was established in June 2019 to discuss the elements to be included into a standard for stretch hood film. A pathway forward to develop the passport was identified which required some fundamental research work and data generation but unfortunately the process was discontinued due to the lack of available funds. Should circumstances change and funds become available in the future, the project will be revisited and potentially be taken up again.
ACHIEVEMENTS: The TC compiled a first draft of EUMOS 40515: Stretch Hood Film Passport defining a clear and agreed objective and scope as well as defining all the relative normative and references. In addition, the majority of the critical performance requirements and test methods were outlined. However, the committee also identified that some fundamental understanding of how stretch hoods apply load containing forces to a cargo was required to further define stretch hood film performance criteria. Following the development of an agreed hypothesis a project plan was agreed requiring a funded research effort over the course of approximately one year.
AUDIENCE: Film producers, OEM’s devoted to hooding equipment, brand owners, validation and certification labs.

EUMOS 40516
Stretch Wrapping Film Passport – Currently Discontinued

SUMMARY: This committee aims at finding measurable and repeatable conditions to create load stability on a unit load using stretch wrapping film as the unitization method. TC EUMOS 40516 was established in June 2019 to discuss guidelines for stretch wrap films, aiming at optimizing the application process and the film usage, leading – for a given load type/weight and wrapping pattern – to maximized load stability and integrity during transportation. The main challenge has been the dependence of stretch film on-pallet performance on the type of contained load and the film wrapping patterns. The work has therefore been discontinued. Should Eumos identify an agreed focus angle, the project will be revisited and potentially be taken up again.
ACHIEVEMENTS: The TC compiled a first draft defining key stretch wrap film requirements for all stages of the packaging (wrapping) process:

  • film unwinding from the rolls
  • film pre-stretching in the wrapping equipment
  • wrapper-to-pallet film application
  • on-pallet performance

The draft addressed stretch film intended use by specifying the wrapping/stretching equipment and methods, i.e.

  • stretch wrapping method/equipment
  • stretch film operational range
  • tension level within the stretch window

AUDIENCE: Film producers, OEM’s devoted to hooding equipment, brand owners, validation and certification labs.
